Our Story
The Home for the Aged on Hosur Road in Bangalore was established in 1900. Nearly 68 years later, in 1968, another Home for the Aged was inaugurated on Hennur Road, along with a Novitiate dedicated to training young women who wished to join the congregation as Little Sisters of the Poor.
In 1964, on Good Shepherd Sunday, the Apostolic Delegate to India, Mgr. Knox, visited the Home on Hosur Road. Deeply impressed by the Sisters’ work and apostolate, he encouraged them to establish a Novitiate in Bangalore. Seeing this as a sign of divine guidance, Mother Provincial St. Edouard began working toward this goal and successfully purchased a piece of land on Hennur Road on September 4, 1964.
Four years later, on January 27, 1968, once the construction was completed, a group of Little Sisters along with several novices inaugurated the section of the building designated for the Novitiate. Another part of the building was set aside to serve as a Home for the Aged. On the same day, four elderly women accompanied the Sisters and novices to become the first residents of the new Home.
Both the Novitiate and the Home for the Aged were placed under the protection of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the institution came to be known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home and Novitiate.
Over the past 50 years, the Home and Novitiate have steadily grown. Each year, groups of novices who completed their two-year formation in the Novitiate made their profession and became members of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Guided by Divine Providence, the Home continues to flourish, just like the other Homes run by the Little Sisters of the Poor across the world. Through this grace, the Sisters are able to care for the elderly residents and ensure they live in comfort, dignity, and happiness.
Following the example of their holy foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, the Sisters continue to express their gratitude with the words:
“Blessed be God, Thank you my God, and Glory be to God” for the daily sustenance and blessings bestowed upon their Home.
