Our Story
JIVAN ANAND OLD AGE HOME was set up in the year 2008 at village Bachherabhata, Tehsil Dongargarh. Featuring majestic mountains and ponds, Dongargarh is a city and municipality in Rajnandgaon District in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The town is known for religious Harmony.
Jivan Anand old age home is the place, a shelter for those old people who have no one to look after them or those who have been thrown out of their homes by their children. This is a place where old people (60 years above) can live together away from their own family members. Old age home staff is supposed to take care of them when they are very weak or ill to take care of themselves. The inmates get all the facilities for a routine living like food, clothing and shelter.
Growing old is the process of life and everyone has to face this period. Every person on the earth has a dream of living a decent long life. The data on old age dependency ratio is slowly increasing in both rural and urban areas. Both for men and women, this figure is quite higher in rural areas when compared with that of urban areas. The challenge of caring for a growing number of elderly is yet to be faced squarely. As people grow older, especially in developing countries like India, they encounter several problems. Some are physical and obviously age related. Some are due to the social structure; break up of joint family system, poverty, loss of employment, widowhood. Some emotional problems like loss of self – esteem, lowered life satisfaction, dependence and depression, feeling of being ignored by family members. All sorts of abuses such as: mal- treatment and physically, vocally and mental torture etc. Elder abuse is increasingly understood to be a serious public health challenge for the 21st century. Then, they become more or less dependent upon their children.
Earlier, the elderly persons of a family were respected and were taken care of by their children and grand children. But now a change can be seen. Many a times children refuse to share the burden of looking after the elderly as they are very busy and do not have time even for their own children.
Growing urbanization and fast moving modern life are the biggest contributor to this problem. Further, erosion of moral values has also ignited this problem. With the breakup of joint family system problem of looking after the elderly has become a matter of concern where both husband and wife are working, they find it more convenient to keep their elderly parents in old age home. They need all the freedom to socialise and enjoy the life forgetting that Their parents were there when they were small and sorted out all their Problem, right from the time they were born. Though, it sounds unbelievable but it is true that there are children who leave their old parents as destitute to die. This has added to the mushrooming of old age homes in India.
Our aim is to make them feel they are truly at home though in a different residence.
