Across the world, millions of senior citizens are facing growing health, emotional, and social challenges. According to United Nations estimates, by 2025 the global population aged 65 years and above will reach nearly 1.2 billion. If the healthcare and well-being needs of older adults are not addressed today, they risk becoming an overwhelming social and economic burden in the future.
In India, approximately 7% of the 1.1 billion population is already above the age of 60, and this proportion continues to rise rapidly. Senior citizens today seek more than basic survival—they aspire to accessible healthcare, dignity, emotional well-being, economic independence, meaningful engagement, and a peaceful end of life.
Government estimates indicate that India’s population aged 60 and above reached 100 million in 2013 and is projected to rise to 198 million by 2030. By 2025, the elderly will constitute nearly 12% of the total population, with 10% of them expected to be bedridden, requiring intensive and long-term care.
While initiatives such as the National Programme for the Healthcare of the Elderly (NPHCE) aim to strengthen geriatric healthcare infrastructure—through specialized medical education and increased hospital bed capacity—the demand for comprehensive, community-based elder care far exceeds current provisions. Swarg Community Care aims to address these pressing challenges by creating a holistic, compassionate, and community-driven elder care ecosystem in Gujarat—one that prioritizes health, dignity, emotional security, and quality of life for senior citizens.
